Mallorca in winter is not the summer island, but it is far from closed: from November to February you get highs of 15 to 19 °C, and caves, cathedrals, museums, wineries, spas and walking routes are open while the villages return to their own rhythm. What does disappear is almost every boat trip, the water parks and swimming in the sea.

In this guide we use the season each operator publishes in our directory to separate what is open from what closes, and add AEMET data (Palma airport) so you know what weather and daylight to expect. If you come for a festival or for the almond blossom, we have separate guides; here are the other plans for the cold months.

The weather from November to February

According to AEMET normals for Palma airport, November has a high of 19 °C and a low of 8, December 16 and 5, January 15 and 4 and February 15 and 4. It rains on about 5 or 6 days a month and the sun shines between 4.9 hours a day (December) and 5.9 (February). The sea runs from 19 °C in November to 14 °C in February: nice to look at, not tempting to swim in.

It gets dark early: around 17:30 in November and December, 17:50 in January and 18:30 in February. Plan long excursions for the morning and keep indoor visits for the afternoon. In the mountains the air is colder than in Palma, and on some days the Tramuntana summits wake up under snow.

What closes in winter and what stays open

The boat season starts in April: Cabrera, the boat to Sa Calobra, the ferry to Formentor beach, trips to Sa Dragonera and the catamarans and sailing boats with a swim stop publish April or May as their start and October as their end. The water parks (Aqualand, Western Water Park, Hidropark) also close, as do sea activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and trial dives in most listings.

Open all year are the caves, Palma's cathedral and museums, gardens, sanctuaries, wineries and oil mills, spas, golf and walking visits. With some nuances: according to the listings, Marineland opens in February, Palma Aquarium in March and the Sóller train runs from February to December, and the Santa Catarina winery closes from 23 December to 8 January. Always confirm opening hours at Christmas and on public holidays.

Palma in winter: cathedral, palace, museums and evenings

Palma is the best base when it is cool: everything is close and under cover. The Cathedral (La Seu), the Almudaina Palace, the Fundació Miró, Es Baluard and the Banys Àrabs are listed as open all year in our records, and the Banys are a half-hour visit. For the short afternoons there is a one-hour flamenco tablao, escape rooms and the hop-on hop-off tourist bus.

The old town at Christmas, Epiphany and Sant Sebastià has its own guide; here it is enough to know that in January the sunsets around 17:50 fall on a city with plenty of life on the streets.

Caves and indoor plans in the east and the centre

The caves keep a stable temperature and, according to their listings, open all year: Drach and Hams at Porto Cristo, Artà at Canyamel and Campanet in the Raiguer. Near Porto Cristo there is also a dinosaur park and the Rafa Nadal Xperience museum at Manacor, and around Palma you can try the Palma Jump trampoline park or the indoor eKarts at Marratxí.

With children, rain or cold go down better with a cave in the morning and an indoor plan in the afternoon. And if the day dawns clear, Safari Mallorca, open all year, is an option you can do from the car.

The Tramuntana and Sóller in winter

The mountains show a different face in winter: green, with water in the torrents and fewer people. The Valldemossa Charterhouse, where Chopin and George Sand spent a winter, Son Marroig, Ca n'Alluny in Deià, the Lluc sanctuary, the Alfàbia gardens and the Raixa estate are open all year according to our listings. In Sóller you can visit the Modernist museum Can Prunera and the MUCBO, the botanical garden and science museum, whose hours from November to February are 10:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday.

Between 15 October and 15 January, a visit to the Can Det oil mill may include live milling, depending on the harvest. And for walking among orange trees, Jürgen Knapp leads German-language walks through the valley between Fornalutx and Sóller; his departures are listed from January to May and from September to November.

Walking, birds and the outdoors

Clear winter days are among the best for walking. Alaró Castle is open from January to June and from September to December in our listing, with a walk up of about 45 minutes from Es Verger; a half-day guided walk with a local guide, with lunch, is listed from November to March, and the Mondragó Natural Park has easy trails of 15 to 60 minutes.

For birdwatchers, s'Albufera and Formentor are the places: the guided visit to s'Albufera with a ranger and the birdwatching outings with Mallorca Nature Tours are listed for winter. And golf runs all year: there are about a dozen courses with their own listing.

Wine, olive oil and winter flavours

Winter is a good time for wineries and oil estates: visits are relaxed and the olive pressing takes place in autumn and early winter. There are tastings in Binissalem, Santa Maria del Camí, Sencelles, Llucmajor and Inca, an olive oil tasting at an estate in Algaida and walks among olive trees in Valldemossa. Many are booked in time slots and on weekdays, so call or book ahead.

Spas and thermal baths for cold days

A thermal circuit is the best plan for a grey day. The Son Armadams spa in Palma opens daily from 9:00 to 21:00 with a 90-minute circuit; the Elba Sunset Thalasso Spa in Palmanova admits outside visitors Monday to Friday in winter, from 11:00 to 19:00 and for over-16s; and the Cap Rocat spa, carved into the rock of a fortress at Cala Blava, admits the public by prior booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is everything closed in Mallorca in winter?

No. The caves, Palma's cathedral and museums, gardens, wineries, spas and golf stay open. What you will not find is almost every boat trip and the water parks, which start in April or May. Each coastal town has some restaurants and shops closed, so confirm before you go.

What is the weather like in Mallorca from November to February?

According to AEMET at Palma airport, highs of 15 to 19 °C and lows of 4 to 8 °C, 5 to 6 rainy days a month and 4.9 to 5.9 hours of sun a day. The sea is between 14 and 19 °C.

Can you go to the beach in winter?

You can walk and sunbathe on clear days, but the water is 14 to 19 °C, so almost nobody swims. For a day on the coast a walk along the shore or in Mondragó works better.

Which winter month is best?

November is the mildest (19 °C by day) and February has the most sun (5.9 hours a day), plus the almond blossom from the end of January. December and January are the coldest, but with festivals and Christmas markets.
